Review:
Ice Arena by =X= Gambit69 is one of the more unusual and creative custom missions you are likely to see. At first glance some may not like this mission. It looks somewhat boring, since it is in fact a giant rectangular box. However, after you play on this mission for sometime you really begin to enjoy it. The mission begins to grow on you; it’s an acquired taste of sorts.
Two generators that sit at ground level power each base. They are protected from the sides by force fields, which are powered by a solar generator mounted onto the back of the base. There are also four inventory stations in this room. With the force fields powered, the generator room is only accessible via two holes in the floor of the room above. This room is protected by a sentry turret but is open to the outside. Mounted to the front of the base is a plasma turret. Floating directly above each base is the flag tower. On either side of the flag tower floats is an identical structure. These additional towers are great sniper nests.
In the center of the mission, mounted to the walls and ceiling, there is a capture point. This capture point consists of two hidden inventory stations, two sentry turrets, and a large sensor array. Although often overlooked, the location and setup of this perch makes it an ideal place to stage base assaults and flag capture attempts.
The ground of this mission is actually a giant platform, so spike turrets can not be deployed anywhere on the mission. Depending on your personal preference, they may or may not be a good thing.
Overall although this mission may be perceived as an ugly duckling, it is a great mission. Its size and layout make it a mission that rewards strategy but still allows for all out dogfights. While play testing this mission one thing Bytor said really sums things up succinctly: “That was carnage!” If you are looking for a creative mission that breaks the traditional Tribes2 mold, then be sure to give this one a shot.
