Review:
Number of the Beast by ToKrZ is a small and extremely fast paced mission that produces very intense game play. With great ski routes, lava, and flags placed in the open, this mission definitely is for those who enjoy the more chaotic Tribes 2 experience.
Each team's base consists of two main structures, a tower and a bunker. The tower was taken from the mission Firestorm, with several additions. The top level of the tower houses two inventory stations plus an additional force field that was not present in Firestorm. At the bottom of the tower rests the primary generator. A solar generator mounted to the upper rear of the tower provides protection for the main generator via two force fields. This solar generator must be destroyed before the opposing team can gain access to both the top inventory stations and the primary generator.
An enlarged flag sits in the open atop the second structure of each base, the bunker. The same solar generator that protects the primary generator projects the two entrances to this bunker. Alone inside the bunker is a pair of inventory stations located directly beneath the flag.
Separating the two bases is a desolate volcanic landscape filled with mountainous terrain and well placed valleys that are ideal for skiing. In the center of the map are four lava lakes perched on top of four separate hills. Hanging above this anything but picturesque scene are five floating platforms. These platforms are perfectly located for raining munitions down upon the enemy base, or staging a flag capture attempt.
This mission, however, is not problem free. There are several easily repairable bugs, the most notable of which is the force fields that surround the bunker. When power is cut to the base, a barrier still exists as if the force fields were still in place. The second problem also has to do with the bunkers; each one is set slightly too low into the terrain. When force fields are up, leaving can be very difficult at certain locations. With these problems remedied this mission could easily receive a score in the low to mid 90's.
Number of the Beast is an excellent mission that shows how unique client side maps can be. The mission's terrain has been customized for maximum speed without compromising visual quality or creativity. The layout of each base as well as the overall mission design is well thought out and superbly executed. There is room in this map for both the offense and defense. Although the terrain favors the offense, the base setup allows the defense to get firmly entrenched. Everyone who enjoys small Tribes 2 maps should be sure to download this mission.
