Review:
Decisions, decisions. Mappers have a lot of decisions to make when it comes to the process of brainstorming, creating, and releasing a map. Hawktoey made a lot of good decisions throughout the many steps involved in making WwTVolcano. The end result is a well-balanced and yet simplistic map that CTF players will enjoy.
The name of the game is to capture your enemy’s flag and six successes will win your team the map. Making good use of the bases we all know and love from Sanctuary, Hawktoey placed the flags inside at the back of the bases. He also added two base turrets to the top front corners of the main bases. These are preset with AA barrels that make short work of both aerial craft and would-be cappers overusing their jets. Three generators located inside the base walls power the two turrets, four inventory stations, and one large pulse sensor.
The objective is a welcome addition to this map. Located in the center, the objective gives a team one base turret, also preset as AA, two inventory stations, one large pulse sensor, one vehicle station, and two more generators to power all of it. The repair pack is located in a tower to make sure the objective is capable of serving its purpose the entire match.
There are a total of three vehicle stations on this map. One is near each of the teams’ main bases giving access to only aerial vehicles. The objective also has a vehicle station that only comes with land vehicles. This is a welcome change from ones that come with all vehicles available.
Both aspects of playing, defense and offense, will have fun on this map. While the main bases can seem compact in their little craters, they can be bombed out easily through a good bombing run. The room containing the flag houses one of the three generators and two inventory stations on either side of it. One good mortar there will put half a team’s assets out of commission so the defense has its work cut out for it. Offense has to deal with the defenders and those nasty AA turrets. Those turrets enjoy picking off people that jet over the crater ridge.
There is only one thing I think could have been improved. The large pulse sensors on the main bases are not quite high enough to see out of the crater. Therefore, its range is limited to what it can see in the crater. Your team can offset this by claiming the center objective to gain more coverage, by deploying sensors outside the crater, and by using shrikes on patrols.
Overall this is an excellent example of the type of CTF map that resulted from some well made decisions during all phases of the map’s development. Hats off to Hawktoey for a well made first map.
